Danilović: The introduction of economic citizenship could further worsen the status of Montenegro in the international community

"Our security services and their assessments are weak, even for individuals from the surrounding area, as evidenced by the fact that we gave citizenship to some in the middle of drug scandals of a global scale," claims Danilović.

MP of United Montenegro Goran Danilović warned that the introduction of economic citizenship could further worsen the status of Montenegro in the international community.

He believes that this opens up additional space for corruption, stating that the introduction of economic citizenship is a security risk.

"Our citizenship does not have any special weight. It does not open all the doors of the world, but because of a few potential customers, some doors can be closed to everyone. The corrupt cycle that privilege can set in motion is devastating. "Our security services and their assessments are weak, even for individuals from the environment, as evidenced by the fact that we gave citizenship to some people in the middle of drug scandals of a global scale," asserts Danilović.

By the decision of the Government, Montenegrin citizenship will be available from October 1 by investing money in development projects. As explained, the program will be available to a maximum of 2.000 applicants from non-EU countries during a period of three years. The EU claims that this decision could be an obstacle in the accession negotiations.

"Our law is so restrictive that those who were born in Montenegro are not allowed to get it without a very complex procedure that entails renouncing someone else and security assessments that also come down to party-political suitability. There are numerous cases where women who married a Montenegrin citizen do not have it, not to mention the case of the people of Vračan", claims Danilović.
