The farewell speech of Serbian Patriarch Irinej on the scaffold of Metropolitan Amfilohi of the Montenegrin littoral completely rounded off the national and symbolic meaning of the spiritual unity of the Serbian people in Montenegro, Serbia and the Republic of Srpska, and showed that our holy Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) is eternal and unbreakable in its foundations centuries built by Saint Sava, announced today Milan Knežević, president of the Democratic People's Party (DNP) and one of the leaders of the Democratic Front (DF).
The head of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC), Patriarch Irinej, died early this morning.
"Patriarch Irinej shined in the Church of the Resurrection of Christ in Podgorica with the immortality of the messages he sent, with his arrival in Montenegro, knowingly risking his health, he testified once again that there is no fear before eternal life in the Kingdom of Heaven, that is why his soul shone especially this morning before the face of our Lord. It was the Lord who granted our patriarch Irinej the blessing to wait for the completion of the work on the temple of Saint Sava in Vračar, to which he devoted himself with all his being and prayers, and which will be the endowment of all the Serbian people, thus once again confirming the great Njegoš: will scramble into the ages to trip you up with a worthy wreath." "And worthy during his life, Patriarch Irinej is even more worthy to enter the heavenly council to continue the apostolic vigil over our people with the cross and prayer," Knežević pointed out.
He said that the Serbian people and the Serbian Orthodox Church are today without their spiritual leader.
"A member of our Orthodox thought, a true ascetic in the post-biblical era, who brought us back again and again to the faith and the best values of our people. And are there more lasting values than those that are created and absorbed in the imperial city of Prizren and the seminary where Patriarch Irinej was a student, professor and rector. It was precisely this sacred Kosovar thought around his head that drew the halo of a man and spiritual man who grew out of the great Serbian nation during his lifetime. And as Miloš Crnjanski wrote, "an endless blue circle with a star in it", so I too am in one on the night of December, when the non-commemorants were mocking our shrines in Montenegro, and when we wanted to illuminate the dark province of human unreasonableness with a candle in the wind, received from His Holiness the blessing that the Serbian Church should be defended everywhere and in every place. And indeed that evening, Patriarch Irinej was a star - a signpost according to which we were guided in the defense of our sanctuaries, and for that our people in Montenegro should be eternally grateful to him. The last time we saw each other in the Patriarchate, he was smiling, gentle and proud of the unity of our people, which was increasingly visible during his spiritual journey through our church," Knežević said.
He added that even when Irenaeus was attacked by those who would do anything for petty political calculations and the vain weaknesses of human nature, Irenaeus "directly, but confidently and courageously continued his evangelical path worthy of his predecessors ordained in the holy Pećaršija".
"That's why everyone who once had the blessing to speak with our Patriarch Irinej felt the special moment in which he knew he met with history. Let the Kingdom of Heaven be an eternal memorial to the Serbian Patriarch Irinej," said Knežević.
