The Social Democrats of Montenegro strongly condemn the statement of the President of the Government of the Republic of Serbia, Ana Brnabić, in which she said that she agrees with what Ambassador Vladimir Božović said, and that the whole of Serbia and half of Montenegro also agree with it, said the member of the Presidency of the SD Marija Blagojevic.
"It is incredible the thoughtlessness demonstrated by a person who is at the head of the government of a country which, as she later stated, at least declaratively stands for good relations in the region, especially with Montenegro," said Blagojević.
She said that it is scandalous that Brnabić says that "the occupation of one country after the victory in the First World War and its violent annexation to another is actually liberation and an expression of the free will of its citizens".
"By doing so, you also show disrespect for the institutions of Montenegro, because the Law on the Status of the Descendants of the Petrović Njegos Dynasty and the Resolution on the occasion of the centenary of the "Podgorica Assembly" adopted by the Parliament of Montenegro clearly speak about the events from that period. Imagine how it would be if someone from the Montenegrin authorities commented on the fact that Dragoljub-Draža Mihailović was rehabilitated in Serbia. In 1918, Mrs. Brnabić, those Montenegrins who were against unconditional unification were brutally killed. Fraternal blood was spilled and you support it, calling it liberation," said Blagojević.
She says that "several times they suggested to colleagues from Serbia that they focus on their internal challenges, as well as on one of the burdensome issues in the region, the relationship between Serbia and Kosovo".
"There is no need for them to burden their public with matters that are the sovereign right of Montenegro as an independent state and about which they do not ask anything. After all, she should have known that the job of diplomatic representatives is not to interpret the history of the country in which they perform the duties of ambassador and to constantly interfere in the internal socio-political issues of the host country. Mrs. Brnabić, good relations between two countries are not built in this way, putting salt in the wound of a huge number of Montenegrin citizens whose ancestors lost their lives in 1918 and who are still pained by such a disappearance of the Montenegrin state. And that is why we are telling you the following - the relations between the two countries should be at the highest level and we want it, obviously more than you, but do not create bad blood between the people of Montenegro with your statements, and then between the people of Montenegro and of Serbia. Whatever the relations between the state authorities are, we are directed at each other and we want it to remain that way", says Blagojević.
Blagojević points out that in connection with the statement of the European Commissioner for Enlargement, Oliver Varhelji, they "expected a higher degree of education" on a topic when an official statement is made, specifically referring to the year 1918 and events in Montenegro.
"Then, we believe, Varhelji will understand why the position of the MFA of Montenegro is correct, while his colleague from Serbia was not." And why they, in the end, changed it. On the other hand, it would be more appropriate, and what is in the spirit of European standards and good practice, especially regional cooperation and good neighborly relations, to point out concerns about statements like the one yesterday, made by Ana Brnabić, who comes from the highest addresses of the neighboring of our country, which threatens to return the region to the eve of 1918 and the nineties of the last century and to further deepen divisions in Montenegro", concludes Blagojević.
