Any change in the legislation in the area related to citizenship should be implemented after broad consultations and with the participation of all relevant decision makers, said the spokesperson of the European Union responsible for foreign and security policy, Peter Stano.
In response to a question from the Television of Montenegro, he said that the EU follows the events in Montenegro very closely and in this context calls on all parties to exercise restraint, to respect the rule of law and to engage in constructive dialogue.
"In the EU, it is up to each country to determine the conditions for acquiring or losing citizenship, while respecting the rights of the Union, and any change in legislation in such an important area should be done in an inclusive manner, bringing together all relevant decision-makers and after broad consultations on the subject." , said Stano.
Regarding the dissatisfaction and protests in Montenegro after the decision on citizenship, he said that freedom of assembly is a basic EU right, but that it should be implemented without negative impact on public health.
Stano said that with regard to any violation of the law, the local authorities must act in accordance with the national legislation and bearing in mind the international standards and obligations of Montenegro.
