A group of representatives of Democratic Montenegro proposed that November 13, Njegoš's birthday, be declared a national holiday.
MPs Boris Bogdanović, Momo Koprivica and Vladimir Martinović submitted to the Assembly a proposal for amendments to the Law on Public Holidays, which would include November 13 - Njegošev's Day, a Montenegrin cultural holiday.
Martinović said at the press conference that this holiday should be called - "Njegošev dan, Montenegrin cultural holiday".
"Peter II Petrović Njegoš and his work are a cohesive force for all citizens of Montenegro, because we all agree on the unquestionable importance of his importance for Montenegro, its statehood and culture," he pointed out.
Martinović believes that November 13, the day of Njegoš's birth, deserves to have the status of a national holiday.
"Montenegro has the opportunity to declare this date as a national holiday in the year when it celebrates the jubilee - 170 years since Njegoš's death," said the Democrat deputy.
It was proposed to include Njegoš's birthday in the national holidays several times before, but the proposals did not pass in the parliament.
Back in 2013, the Ministry of Culture of Montenegro proposed that Njegoš's birthday be declared a national holiday of culture. The proposal did not pass, just as it did not pass in 2016, when the Government also announced the establishment of Njegoš Day as a new national holiday. The Government gave up on that proposal,
The Bosniak Party, a coalition partner of the government at the time, strongly reacted to that proposal.
Then, in October 2018, the opposition Democratic Front actualized the proposal to declare Njegoš's birthday, November 13, as a Montenegrin cultural holiday.
There was not enough of a majority in the parliament to open a discussion about it, and the DF submitted the petition in 2019 as well.
