Citizens' support for Montenegro to be the next member of the European Union has never been greater than it is today, announced Prime Minister Zdravko Krivokapić.
He met with the non-resident ambassador of the Republic of Ireland in Montenegro, Ronan Gargano.
As announced by the Government, Krivokapić assessed that the relations between the two countries are friendly, and that they should be improved, especially in areas where mutual interest is evident, such as the economy and tourism, and in the sectors of law, defense and internal affairs. .
According to reports, Krivokapić expressed optimism that Ireland, following the example of many EU member states, will put Montenegro on the "green list" of countries that are safe for tourist visits.
The Prime Minister said that for Montenegro, Ireland is one of the best examples of how a small country can use its EU member status to achieve the best possible future for all its citizens.
"The voice of the people is binding for this Government. There has never been greater support from the people for Montenegro to be the next member of the EU than today. Montenegro cannot be civil or European if it is not economically stronger. We will do everything to win the fight against crime and corruption, but if we do not become economically stronger, our fight may be in vain," said Krivokapić.
He emphasized that the task of the current government is to organize Montenegro in accordance with European standards, respecting all European values, and that its first task is to make Montenegro different through the investments of European partners, and Ireland can certainly help with that.
"The moment has come for us not to deal with the past, but to turn to the future for the sake of our children and descendants. We wish to strengthen relations between our peoples and for Montenegro to truly feel the spirit of Europe," said Krivokapić.
According to the Government, Gargan said that the relations between the two countries are good, but that they can be improved, especially in the tourism sector.
"I believe that Montenegro will be on the "green list" sooner or later. Ireland is cautious when it comes to opening borders. I hope that vaccination will bring life back to normal."
Gargan assessed that the road to the EU was demanding, but that it was the road that Ireland also went through and that its citizens benefited greatly from it.
"I want to assure you that in the future you will have our support. European values are important, not only because of the European path, but because of the economic and democratic strengthening of the country", said Gargan, the Government announced.
