During her visit to the Balkans, the head of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, promised the Balkan countries a future in the European Union (EU), but those promises were met with skepticism in the region, according to today's Moscow daily Kommersant.
The newspaper states that her visit coincided with "the beginning of the resolution of the crisis on the border of Kosovo and Serbia", which the EU can take credit for.
"If one of the objectives of the Balkan tour of the head of the EC – de-escalation on the Serbian-Kosovo border can be considered achieved, the perspective of the region's EU membership was not clarified by the visit," the daily writes.
The newspaper adds that Von der Leyen probably sensed the skeptical attitude of her interlocutors towards assurances about the European future.
Referring to European diplomatic sources, Komersant states that it is unlikely that the initiative to admit all Balkan countries to the EU by 2030, which was proposed by Slovenia on the eve of the EU-Western Balkans summit, will be accepted and that it will be mentioned at the summit on October 6. concrete dates for the accession of the Balkan countries to the EU.
