Cooperation with Montenegro is based on common values and interests. If the composition of the Government changes, and the values and interests change, it could affect the breadth of our cooperation, said the British Ambassador to Montenegro, Karen Maddox, in a guest appearance on the Television of Montenegro (TVCG), when asked if she supports the entry of the leader of the Democratic Front into the Government.
She said that it is important that the Government can function with the support of coalition partners, especially in the context of reforms that are necessary for Montenegro.
"The internal discussions that are being conducted are precisely against the background of that intention and the opportunity exists," Maddox said and added that if the majority of deputies want new elections, then that is an indication of what the electorate wants.
She pointed out that a lot needs to be done on the way to the EU.
"Montenegro has become a politically dynamic society. You have shown that political power can change, but it is evident that you have entered a new political era, where you have numerous opinions within the ruling coalition. Political subjects therefore become more responsible because they have to impress voters," she said. is Maddox.
When it comes to the opposition, she said that she sees the decisions and intentions of the ruling coalition being questioned every day and that this is exactly the task of the opposition parties.
"It reminds me of the political situation that you can see in the United Kingdom and in every other democratic country. There are examples in Great Britain, and I would like to see that here, where the position and the opposition are getting closer to each other, cooperating and discussing important issues. It is necessary to see this in Montenegro as well, a discussion and vote on things that will push Montenegro forward, such as reforms and accession to the European Union," said the British ambassador.
She stated that there is evidence of polarization of society, as well as polarization in the domain of politics.
"It's a shame that this is the case. The country is going through a period of transition, political changes where we hear many opinions in the Parliament and in everyday politics. It takes some time for such a system to become receptive and, so to speak, normal, in everyday discourse," Maddox said.
She pointed out that it is difficult to reach an agreement when there are many different opinions, but that one should not give up.
"The parties need to find a consensus. The solution is a political dialogue. The resolution on Srebrenica shows that it is possible for the parties to come together around a topic and agree," said the British ambassador.
She said that political parties should not be afraid that they will look weak if they overcome certain political and party principles and that politicians who overcome these divisions will be more attractive to the electorate.
