"Our caucus in the Parliament of Montenegro is working on amending a set of laws that we will propose soon, in order to stop the rampant poaching in Montenegro," said Ljiljana Jokić, a candidate for councilor of the Citizens' Movement URA in Mojkovac.
As she said, the case of a few days ago, when a deer was killed in the Biogradska Gora National Park, shows how bad the situation is in that area.
"Not so long ago, there was also a massacre of roe deer, the killing of barn owls, bears... The list is long and in the coming period we will take concrete actions to stop the continuation of these crimes".
Jokić explains that they are working on amendments to the laws related to hunting.
"Currently, the maximum penalty for illegal hunting is three years, and that is something that must definitely change. We believe that this is a very small penalty and we will propose rigorous penalties for poachers. Poaching is one of the most serious threats to the survival of protected animal species in Montenegro. That issue is not regulated well enough, and in the part that is - implementation is missing. Protected animal species really must be, and all the perpetrators of these cruel acts must be punished".
He also notes that he will soon hold a meeting with experts in the field in order to find together the best ways and mechanisms to put an end to poaching, but also to better regulate the issue of hunting in Montenegro.
