Maddox: It is legitimate for the majority to request new elections

Great Britain's ambassador to Montenegro, Karen Maddox, told Nikšić Television that it is legitimate for the parliamentary majority to request early elections, and that the government can only be stable if different groups feel that their interests are represented.

"Any methods that follow democratic processes and are in accordance with the Constitution can be seen as possible ways to solve the political crisis. The people of Montenegro elected 2020 deputies in 81 and as representatives of the people they can freely choose to configure themselves as they think is best. Alternatively, the majority in the Assembly can decide to ask the people to re-run the election," Maddox said.

She added that "both options are possible and legitimate."

"But whatever mechanism they choose to form a new government, the more important question should be whether they intend to take an inclusive approach. The government will only be stable and sustainable if different groups feel their interests are represented. When people feel excluded from the political of life and cannot use democratic channels to make their voice heard, then tensions arise in society," concludes Maddox.
