Uljarević: We will bear the mark of an unreliable partner of NATO and the EU for a long time

The Director of the Center for Civic Education (CGO) Daliborka Uljarević assessed that the country will suffer long-term political damage because the Government did not make a decision supporting the European Union's sanctions against Russia.

"The Government's refusal to fully align with EU policy in relation to Russian aggression, in the part of implementing specific measures, is not a policy of non-alignment but direct support for Russian aggression, as is the alleged advocacy of media freedom in order to avoid some previously proposed measures, which The EU has already introduced direct support for Russian propaganda. And that politically harms the state of Montenegro in the long term, but it should also disqualify everyone who is on that line from the circle of progressive political forces," she told Vijesti.

Uljarević was asked to comment on the consequences of the Government's irresponsible attitude towards this issue and its impact on the fulfillment of obligations and the country's access to the EU.

She states that this situation, as she says, exposed the outgoing Prime Minister Zdravko Krivokapić and ministers close to him to trample on the state and public interest, for the sake of immature political ambitions and the affirmation of a retrograde ideological worldview that cannot be the face of modern Montenegro.

"This is not the first drastic example that the prime minister and his ministers have shown their inability to manage crisis situations and that they have put private interests and day-to-day political exaggerations above fundamental values. We also saw this during the events in Cetinje, in September 2021, which was the turning point for further realignments on the political scene, and since when the loss of support for this Government among Western partners begins. Responsible politics means making timely decisions and taking clear positions on key issues. The belief of some politicians that they can play non-aligned in such situations is ignorant, and it should not be ruled out that in some cases it is also an instructive action in favor of hegemonic projects, whether they are of a regional or broader character," says the interlocutor.

Montenegro has now shown itself, adds Uljarević, as an unreliable partner of NATO and the EU: "Regardless of the fact that Krivokapić and his ministers put that mark, this country will bear it long after he and those ministers disappear from the political scene."

The director of the CGO reminds that the previous government brought European integration to the point of stagnation through a process that lasted for years, although it started positively and with a lot of Euro-enthusiasm.

This government "succeeded", she states, in showing that in less than 15 months, it is possible to act more destructively.

"So we have been in regression for some time in the negotiations with the EU, and with this positioning of the Government towards the aggressor, we risk that the path to the EU will be seriously called into question, because it will not go unnoticed by those who evaluate our credibility and readiness for further stages towards membership in EU. This should be a lesson to those who are now working on the formation of a new government, especially if the new government intends to continue to calculate with some universal, civilizational values, as it did until the last day of the government of Zdravko Krivokapić, or with the rule of law, such as that was done by previous ruling structures. For this Government, and unfortunately for Montenegro, everything ends with a flood of biblical proportions, and only those who clearly support pro-European values ​​will remain on Noah's Ark," says the interviewee for Vijesti.
