The formation of the new Government of Montenegro is good news, said the President of the Parliamentary Committee for Stabilization and Association of the European Union (EU) and Montenegro, Vladimir Bilčik, adding that it is very important that the process of maturing democracy has taken place.
The Information Service of the President of Montenegro stated that President Milo Đukanović received a delegation of the European People's Party (EPP), which, in addition to Bilčik, is led by the spokesperson for enlargement and neighborhood of the EPP, Andrej Kovačev, as well as the vice-president of the EPP group and their president for foreign affairs. "Montenegro is a small country, but it can do great things for itself, the region and the policy of enlargement, which we experience completely differently after the aggression against Ukraine," said Bilčik.
He added that it is therefore important to deliver results as soon as possible, in which, as Bilčik added, Montenegro will have the support and help of partners from European institutions.
Đukanović expressed particular satisfaction that the visit coincides with the celebration of Europe Day in Cetinje.
He pointed out that Cetinje, historically speaking, is the most European face of Montenegro, which is witnessed even these days through the daily support and solidarity of the people of Cetinje with the people of Ukraine.
"Reminding that the MP's visit is a continuation of the dialogue that Montenegro has with European institutions, he pointed to the current moment of the worsening security situation in Europe, which has repercussions on our region as well, where European unity and its system of values are being targeted," the statement said.
As stated, Đukanović emphasized the importance of Europe understanding that it must invest additional effort in this region, appreciating that it is the final opportunity for the region to return to the path of serious reforms and to become part of the EU, without shortcuts and with a well-deserved invitation to live in a united Europe.
He confirmed the full readiness of Montenegro to respect the rules of that game and unblock the negotiation process as soon as possible, which, he said, will be the priority of the new government.
Kovačev said that the arrival of parliamentarians in Montenegro on Europe Day is a confirmation of support for Montenegro's full membership in the EU and the forces in Montenegro that lead to that goal.
He thanked Đukanović for the timely and clear vision of Montenegrin's path to the EU and in relation to geopolitical developments and their impact on the Western Balkans, which are now more clearly recognized in Europe.
"We need European Montenegro not only as a leader in integration, but also as an example for others in the region and a good positive signal from the Western Balkans," Kovačev said.
He emphasized that the EPP delegation came to Montenegro and that it motivates all actors in the country who have the strength to leave short-term goals behind and look at the bigger picture.
Kovačev said that geopolitical challenges, the influence of misinformation, abuse of religion for various purposes are clearly visible, which are serious challenges not only for Montenegro, but also for the region and the EU.
"That's why we need Montenegro and the Western Balkans to remain united on the European path," said Kovačev.
