The OSCE mission in Montenegro announced that, in cooperation with the Association of Disabled Youth of Montenegro (UMHCG), it launched a campaign to inform more than 1.000 people with disabilities about their right to vote in elections.

As they state, the campaign includes two video spots that are broadcast on national and local television channels ahead of the local elections on October 23.

Head of Mission Dominik Vag, as written in the announcement, said that OSCE participating states are committed to protecting the human rights of persons with disabilities and promoting their participation in decision-making processes, including elections.

"It is of vital importance to ensure the participation of persons with disabilities in political, public and social life," emphasized Vag.

The executive director of the Association of Disabled Youth, Marina Vujačić, as written in the announcement, said that people with disabilities, who have been deprived of business capacity, often do not know that they have the right to vote in elections.

"Therefore, the role of this campaign is to inform people with disabilities, as well as all actors in the electoral process, that people with disabilities have the right to vote freely in elections. Institutions responsible for conducting elections should enable the unhindered exercise of the right to vote for everyone, and political parties to affirm the participation of people with disabilities in elections and politics," said Vujacic.

The OSCE Mission adds that this campaign is part of the activities carried out by the Mission, which are aimed at strengthening the institutional capacities of the State Election Commission.

"The Commission has recently amended its by-laws to ensure that persons with disabilities can vote independently and by secret ballot," the statement concludes.
