The President of the Committee for Foreign Affairs, Borko Stevanovič, in a conversation with the President of the Committee for International Relations and Emigrants of the Parliament of Montenegro, Miodrag Lekić, pointed out that he was encouraged by the democratic capacity of the Montenegrin people and the political will shown in the elections.
As stated in the announcement of the Assembly of Serbia, Stefanović expressed his satisfaction with the positive messages coming from Podgorica, which indicate the need for cooperation and unity between Serbia and Montenegro and the development of relations that will not be burdened by myths and nationalism.
Miodrag Lekić agreed that the relations between the two countries rest on an extraordinary basis and that there is a positive relationship between the two peoples, which has often been subject to manipulation, and that it is now up to them to further develop those relations.
He also pointed out that the results of the elections in Montenegro represent a fundamental shift, as well as that there is still a lot of work to be done to strengthen institutions.
The interlocutors also exchanged opinions on the current political situation in the two countries, the region and Europe.
They agreed that the European perspective is the only perspective for the Western Balkans and that regional cooperation is very important.
They assessed that better traffic connections, economy and culture are topics of mutual interest for the citizens of Serbia and Montenegro.
Borko Stefanović stated that "the messages of Montenegro have always been constructive regarding the situation in Kosovo and Metohija" and added that Serbia is trying to "provide security and a better life for Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija", as well as that it cannot be expected from " of Serbia to accept the independence of the so-called Kosovo", because that would mean the collapse of the dignity and existence of Serbia as a sovereign state, the announcement states.
He advocated for Serbia to introduce sanctions against Russia, stating that Serbia will have a harder time defending its vital national interests if it remains the only country in Europe that has not introduced sanctions. He said that as the chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, he submitted a proposal for a resolution on harmonizing the foreign policy of Serbia with the foreign policy of the European Union in the form of restrictive measures towards Russia.
