Prime Minister Dritan Abazović said that he plans to hand over the Montenegrin passport to tennis player Novak Djokovic.

On November 1 last year, Abazović handed over the Montenegrin passport to the famous basketball player Vlado Divac.

Divac addressed the Prime Minister's Office on June 23, 2022 with a request for admission to Montenegrin citizenship pursuant to Article 12 of the Law on Montenegrin Citizenship.

"I am glad that I did it personally. Vlade Divac is a legend, these people, due to circumstances, in their post-sports career spend a certain part of their lives in Montenegro. It is also an incentive for people who are lucky in Montenegro. It's a great thing, I personally think that we will do the same with Đoković," Abazović told Nova.rs.

For years, Djokovic spends part of the summer in Montenegro, in the break between important tournaments.

"He is a big fan of Montenegro, he often stays there, is there anything nicer than being surrounded by people around whom we have undivided opinions. Around whom it is easy to animate others to follow their example, even if it is unattainable. In general, I think that sport we help a lot to overcome some adversities we have, political or economic, in a much easier way. My full support to people who are a global brand. They are not only a brand of Serbia, nor of Montenegro, they are a global brand. I think they have the same respect in the Philippines, in the USA, Africa and of course in the countries they come from".

Abazović further explained how much he respects Djokovic and his family.

"He was almost in Montenegro, he was on the cable car, he promoted it in a nice way. We are in contact, we also met in the semi-finals of the Champions League. It's true, he supported Milan, and I supported Inter, then I had I'm luckier. Well, even Novak can't always win in everything. In general, I personally would like to, if that's his wish. Of course, there's no pressure here, it's a matter of will, he's equally welcome without it. And not only him, but anyone who really deserves and can be a promoter, among other things, of our country of Montenegro," added Abazović.
