The Democrats will demand that monuments to Njegoš and Patriarch Varnava be erected in Pljevlja

Democratic Montenegro will submit an initiative in the local parliament to build a monument to Peter II Petrović Njegoš in Pljevlja.

"As November 13, the birthday of Petar II Petrović Njegoš, on the initiative of the Democrats, was declared the Day of Culture in Montenegro, our committee club will initiate the construction of a monument dedicated to our greatest poet, thinker and ruler at one of the next sessions," the Committee Club announced. of Democratic Montenegro in the Assembly of the Municipality of Pljevlja.

The party announced that at the next session of the local parliament, at the end of February, there will be an initiative to erect a monument to patriarch Varnava Rosić, born in Pljevljak.

"Democratic Montenegro has for many years, through several election programs, public appearances and parliamentary debates in past convocations of the parliament, advocated for the erection of a monument to patriarch Varnava Rosić, one of the greatest Pljevlja people, a man who marked a historical epoch. We from the committee club of Democratic Montenegro want to please all the citizens of Pljevlja with the news that the initiative regarding the erection of the monument will be taken up already at the next session of the parliament at the end of February. Given that the consent of the Ministry of Culture is necessary for its implementation, we will make the maximum effort to present this project in a valid manner and to start its implementation as soon as possible", the announcement of the Committee Club of Democratic Montenegro states.

The monument would be built in the middle of the square that bears Varnava's name, that is, the intersection near the church of Sveta Petka, not far from his birthplace.

The Municipality previously announced that temporary buildings located in the immediate vicinity must be removed before the start of construction.

The proposal for the construction of a monument to Patriarch Varna Rosić was previously submitted by Ermin Harbić when he was a member of the Democratic Party of Socialists, as well as Democratic Montenegro and the Serbian Cultural Center.

Explaining his proposal, Harbić said that in this way the Municipality of Pljevlja would pay tribute to one of the most prominent citizens of Pljevlja.

At that time, Harbić's proposal was met with numerous criticisms.

Patriarch Varnava, whose secular name is Petar Rosić, was born in Pljevlja in 1880 and was the 40th patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church from 1930 to 1937. He died suddenly in 1937 under mysterious circumstances, at the moment when the concordat between the Vatican and the Kingdom of Yugoslavia was voted in the Assembly of Yugoslavia, which he opposed.
