The reform of electoral legislation is very important and the Government gives full support to the Legislative Committee of the Assembly to complete this demanding work, Prime Minister Milojko Spajić said at a meeting with the director of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) Mateo Mekači.

As announced by the Government, it was emphasized in the conversation that this will increase citizens' trust in the entire election process, and that reaching the highest European standards is one of the conditions for European integration.

Spajić said that now is the right moment to reform the electoral legislation.

"Because there is a great political will to carry out significant reforms, which are for the benefit of all the citizens of Montenegro, not parties or individuals. We must not miss this opportunity," Spajić said.

Mekači pointed out that there is no perfect electoral system that would work in every country, but that there are a lot of recommendations to raise this entire process in Montenegro to a higher level.

"Each system has its own specifics, and one of the advantages of ODIHR is that we look at the situation in several countries and have a lot of experience. I think that as a country you have a chance to come to a solution now, because you have enough space to implement the recommendations", said Mekači.

He added that ODIHR is ready to support and help Montenegro in technical matters.

The Government said that the important decisions made in recent months were also discussed at the meeting, which are, as stated, an indicator that the society in Montenegro is ready to work effectively on deep reforms.

"The great importance of the presence of ODIHR observers during the elections last year was noted, which helped to strengthen the electoral process and increase citizens' trust in it," the statement said.

It is stated that the meeting concluded that effective communication will continue and that ODIHR can count on the Government's responsible approach in order to continue successfully performing its important work.
