President of Montenegro Jakov Milatović met today in the Vatican with Pope Francis at whose invitation he is making an official visit to the Holy See.
On the eve of the private audience with Pope Francis, Milatović was ceremonially welcomed by the Swiss Guard, and after a conversation with the head of the Roman Catholic Church, he was presented with a work with a representation of the Virgin made of traditional Dobrot lace, which is recognized as a protected intangible cultural asset of Montenegro, the office of the president of the state announced.
Milatović, it is added, highlighted the importance of Pope Francis' commitment to peace, justice and equality among people, and welcomed the activities that the pope is doing in terms of taking care of refugees, sending aid to underdeveloped countries, fighting poverty, as well as strengthening the role of the rule of law and interfaith dialogue.
"He emphasized that Montenegro is a truly multi-ethnic and multi-confessional state dedicated to the full valorization of the spiritual and cultural traditions of all religious communities. He pointed to Montenegro's excellent relationship with the Catholic Church, adding that its believers are loyal and respected citizens of our country. He reminded that Catholics gathered around the Archdiocese of Bar and the Diocese of Kotor, have a centuries-old continuity in Montenegro and a rich cultural heritage, and said that they represent a significant and indispensable part of the duration of the historical vertical of our country," the announcement states.
In addition to the meeting with Pope Francis, Milatović also met with the State Secretary of the Holy See, Cardinal Pietro Parolin.
"During the meeting, the excellent and friendly relations between Montenegro and the Holy See were noted, as well as the interest in further strengthening of interstate cooperation. The President emphasized the importance of the initiated initiative of the resident representation of the Holy See in Montenegro and expressed his readiness to provide all necessary assistance for the opening of the Papal Nunciature in Podgorica. Finally, he invited the Pope to visit Montenegro, which would represent a step forward in deepening the relationship between Montenegro and the Holy See, but also a confirmation of the state's commitment to preserve and improve relations with all religious communities in the country," the announcement concludes.
