The nationalists did not draw a lesson from the death of 150 thousand people that their policy was wrong, but the conclusion that today, when relations are strained, their ideas could be realized, said former Montenegrin president Milo Đukanović.
He said this for N1, commenting on the recent visit of the president of the Bosnian entity Republika Srpska, Milorad Dodik, to Montenegro.
Đukanović said that the relations between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro are very exemplary, as evidenced by many events from recent history.
"As a man who has been involved in state politics for a long time, I can testify that there was friendship and understanding. When there are geopolitical disturbances such as we see today, when the era of idyll between East and West is over, then the nationalists use it as a convenient time to achieve their goals," he said. is Đukanović.
He added that nationalists have not learned the lessons from "earlier deaths".
"The nationalists did not learn from the death of 150 thousand people that their policy was wrong, but they drew the conclusion that they did not have a good time and that today, when relations are strained, their ideas could be realized," said Đukanović.
He said that he places the provocations from Dodik's visit in that context.
"It is an irresponsible policy that tries to muddy the clear water between our two countries," said Đukanović.
He said that the rise of the right in Europe is very dangerous, not only in the Balkans where, as he said, nationalisms have reared their heads again.
"We prematurely hoped that they were buried in the wars that ended with the Dayton Peace," said Đukanović.
He said that right-wing activism has become very dangerous and lucrative today and said that the European Union must defend itself with the superiority of its policy.
"It seems to me that we are not dealing with it enough in Europe. I think it is the last warning sign and that we have to defend the EU", said Đukanović and added that he does not see an alternative to democracy, the rule of law, and the market economy.
