Changes to the Law on Citizenship will be made only after all protective legal mechanisms have been provided, Prime Minister Milojko Spajić's office announced.
"In order to clarify and prevent the potential spread of misinformation in connection with the statement of the Prime Minister regarding changes to the Law on Montenegrin Citizenship, which would imply the acquisition of the right to vote 10 years after the admission of a person to Montenegrin citizenship under certain conditions, we inform you that with the change Act only after all protective legal mechanisms have been provided," the announcement states.
Spajić's cabinet said that constitutional changes are a prerequisite for such solutions.
"...And, accordingly, the procedure itself must be harmonized in detail with the legal system. At the same time, taking special care to prevent potential abuses of this mechanism and protect the interests of the state of Montenegro", they add.
"Thus, Prime Minister Spajić emphasized today that Montenegro must not give up its children, that it must take care of its diaspora, regardless of where it was, and that in this sense it must emulate the countries that have solved this issue in the best way And just as the Prime Minister said during the press conference, "Our people in Turkey, Serbia, Argentina, America, wherever they are, must have the same treatment. Those people would have a Montenegrin passport and be proud of their country." These people are not asking for the right to vote, but for a minimum of respect for their patriotism,'' the announcement concludes.
