The time has come for Montenegro to become the 28th member of the European Union, and Prime Minister Milojko Spajić's policy is leading the country in that direction, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said during a meeting with Spajić on the sidelines of the NATO Summit being held in Washington.
As announced by the Government, Spajić during the conversation emphasized the importance of Montenegro's membership in the European Union and on that line thanked Spain for its support during the previous seven months.
Obtaining the IBAR, as he said, is as important for Montenegro as for the European Union itself, and expressed the expectation that the final phase of the negotiation process will contribute to the full transformation of Montenegro into a mature and economically empowered member state.
According to the government, Sánchez welcomed the "exceptional progress of Montenegro" and said that with its membership in NATO, by reaching the allocation of over 2 percent of GDP for defense, but also by consistently implementing the Alliance's policies in all areas, Montenegro has shown that "the country which the European Union can count on".
"The time has come for the European Union to get its 28th member state," Sanchez said.

The two Prime Ministers, it was announced from the Government, also agree that the relations between Montenegro and Spain need a new flywheel and stressed the need to intensify the economic dialogue in the coming period.
It was agreed that as two Mediterranean countries, Montenegro and Spain would intensify cooperation in the field of tourism and hotel industry, while Sanchez conveyed the interest of Spanish companies in projects in Montenegro.
"The interlocutors expressed their satisfaction with the participation in the historic NATO Summit in Washington and reiterated their determination to contribute to the goals of the Alliance of the most powerful defense alliance in the world in the future," the statement concluded.
