As things currently stand, the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) should run independently in the upcoming special elections in Podgorica, and the Bosniak Party (BS) could go to the polls in the capital in the same way. On the other hand, the possibility of forming a large coalition of ruling parties from the state level, which would be led by someone from the Europe Now Movement (PES), has not yet been ruled out - "Vijesti" has learned unofficially.
The newspaper's source from the DPS said that their idea is to go to the polls without coalition partners and that it is likely that they will be led in that process by the deputy of that party and the head of its Podgorica committee. Nermin Abdić.
The interlocutor explained the plan to perform by themselves by saying that BS, which recently became part of the state government, is no longer in their background, that the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the Social Democrats (SD) and the Liberal Party (LP) formed the European Union, and that the Democratic the Union of Albanians (DUA) has symbolic support in Podgorica.
In the previous elections in the capital, held in October 2022, the DPS participated in a broad coalition with these parties and the New Left, the Civic Initiative "May 21" and the Democratic Roma Party. That alliance won the most mandates in those elections - 24, but DPS lost power in Podgorica after almost a quarter of a century.
A source from the DPS said that the Podgorica committee of that party is in the process of nominating candidates for councilors, while another interlocutor from that party stated that the list of candidates is being sent to their presidency for approval, adding that the party bodies have not yet discussed the candidate. lists.
When it comes to BS, "Vijesti" has learned unofficially that so far there have been no discussions with that party about entering into a coalition arrangement, and therefore, if nothing changes in the meantime, it will also go to the polls independently. The public is speculating that BS could allegedly form an alliance with PES and the Democrats.
In order for BS to run independently with a minority electoral list (that is, a list representing a minority people or a minority national community), it is necessary to collect 150 signatures, and in order to enter the Podgorica parliament, it would need, as the "Vijesti" source from that party claims , about 1.700 votes. BS won 1.923 votes in the parliamentary elections in Podgorica last June.
That party has never performed alone in the capital until now.
So far, it is certain that the list of the recent Minister of Justice should also run independently in the elections in Podgorica Andrej Milović, the "Forward" movement of his predecessor in the ministerial post Marko Kovač, the Party of European Progress of the former prime minister Duško Marković, the "Revolution" movement, the European Union, but also some other smaller political entities.
Lista Milović, Kovač, which will be led by the director of the Health Insurance Fund Vuk Kadic, and Marković, this will be the first appearance at the polls, "Preokret" participated in the previous elections in Podgorica and some other municipalities, while the European Union, whose list will be carried by the representative of SD Boris Mugoša, performing for the first time in this format in the capital.
On the other hand, the Movement for Podgorica and the Citizens' Movement (GP) URA should go to the polls in a coalition, within the political bloc that gathers the head of state Jakov Milatović. That list should be headed by the deputy mayor and an official of the GP URA Luka Rakcevic.
Other political actors do not yet know how they will go about the elections. PES and Democrats unofficially, and the parties of the former Democratic Front (DF) officially and unofficially announced to "Vijesti" that they have yet to determine in which model they will go to the polls.
A source from the former DF told the paper that the possibility of forming a large coalition consisting of the constituents of that former alliance, PES and the Democrats, and led by someone from PES, has not yet been ruled out. New Serbian Democracy (NSD), one of the constituents of the former DF, confirmed that they are in the mood for a wider coalition.
"I am convinced that the coalition 'For the future of Podgorica' is something that was a good model of approach to citizens, but we are also open to a broader coalition story. The coalition 'For the future of Podgorica' has shown through its work in the previous period that it is an adequate approach to citizens, but we appreciate the fact that citizens value those who are able to gather and unite differences, and that's why we are open to the expansion of the coalition," the head of the NSD parliamentary group in the Podgorica parliament told "Vijesta" Mitar Susic.
"Vijesti" has unofficially learned that a public opinion survey was carried out for the Democrats in connection with the upcoming elections, which showed that a large coalition, which would include the former DF, would not provide a "synergistic effect". Democrats should soon define in which arrangement they will go to the polls.
When it comes to PES, "Vijesti" recently announced that the most serious candidate for the party's list holder is the president of its Podgorica committee and the minister of energy. Saša Mujović.
Elections in Podgorica are scheduled for September 29, after the mandate of the local parliament was recently shortened by the votes of opposition councilors, Milatović close to the Movement for Podgorica, GP URA and one councilor from the Movement for Change (PzP). The outgoing government in Podgorica consists of PES, a coalition gathered around the former DF, Demokrata and GP URA.
The deadline for submitting ballots for the elections in Podgorica begins on August 17 and will last until midnight on September 3.
