The legislative committee supported today, by a majority of votes, the amendments to the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament of Montenegro, according to which a maximum of two vice-presidents of the parliament can be from minority parties.
Until now, minority parties have had one vice-presidential seat in the Assembly.
The proposal to amend the Rules of Procedure was submitted by a group of deputies of the parliamentary majority, and the deputies will discuss it at an extraordinary session on Friday.
In the proposal for changes to the Rules of Procedure, it is written that they can be legally justified by "the need to ensure equal rights, promote democratic principles and align with international standards for the protection of minority rights".
The MP of the Europe Now Movement (PES) Vasilije Čarapić said that there is an agreement within the parliamentary majority and this shows the strength of the parliamentary majority, which almost has two-thirds support "which no one has had before".
"And we want to implement that strength and send a message that we are here for big things," said Čarapić, answering the question of Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) deputy Oskar Huter, "why two (vice presidents) at most, why not four at most".
Huter said that it was clear to everyone that this was an ordinary sale of armchairs, "so that everyone on that train would find a place to sit".
If the amendments to the Rules of Procedure and the Proposal to amend the decision on the number of vice-presidents are adopted by the Assembly, the current convocation of the parliament would have five, instead of the four vice-presidential positions established.
