The cooperation between Montenegro and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) contributes to raising standards, strengthening capacities and improving migration management, said Minister of Foreign Affairs Ervin Ibrahimović.
He said this in a conversation with the head of the IOM Mission in Montenegro, Vladimir Gjorgjiev.
In the announcement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it is stated that Ibrahimović and Gjiorgijev assessed that cooperation in initiatives aimed at overcoming challenges in the field of migration brings benefits in terms of reforms that Montenegro implements within the negotiation process with the European Union (EU).
Ibrahimović said that joint efforts are especially important in times of growing migration at the global level, which is influenced by numerous factors.
"Our long-term cooperation and IOM's support contribute to raising standards, strengthening capacities and overall improvement of migration management, including integrated border management and the fight against smuggling and human trafficking," Ibrahimović said.
He added that IOM's support is significant from the aspect of capacity building and improvement of the institutional framework, but also through participation in numerous regional projects and initiatives.
Gjorgjiev said that the cooperation with the institutions in Montenegro is excellent and that the IOM strives, through support for institutional reforms, to help Montenegro reach international standards in the field of migration management.
And in this way, he added, it will contribute to progress in key chapters of negotiations with the EU.
"The projects we implement are compatible with the activities that Montenegro implements in the direction of achieving its key foreign policy goal - membership in the EU," stated Gjiorgijev.
He added that this is their programmatic and strategic commitment.
"You can count on the full support of the IOM in that direction," said Gjorgjiev.
As announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ibrahimović and Gjiorgijev pointed to the successful implementation of this year's Montenegrin Diaspora Days.
The announcement reminds that the organization of the event was supported by the IOM.
Ibrahimović and Gjiorgijev also discussed the importance of proactive action in the direction of fully valorizing the potential of the diaspora and jointly addressing the challenges that affect the increase in migration, as well as the quality of the institutional response to their consequences.
