The joint non-party candidate of the opposition can defeat the candidate of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS), Milo Đukanović, in the presidential elections, announced one of the leaders of the Democratic Front (DF), Milan Knežević.
He said that the DF is ready to propose a non-party personality as a joint candidate of the opposition.
"No president of the opposition party can defeat the DPS candidate, and that reality should be respected. The experience we had in 2013 confirmed that an opposition united only around a non-party figure can defeat the regime's candidate," Knežević told the MINA agency.
He stated that "false public opinion polls, such as that of Srđo Darmanović, in which reality is distorted with fabricated percentages of support, can lead a number of opposition leaders to, in jargon terms, "spill" in the elections."
According to him, this "spill" would result in several weak opposition candidates and Djukanović's victory in the first round.
"It is my duty to point out that the DPS wishes for this kind of scenario and deliberately pumps the political ego of individuals from the opposition in order to later push them into the political abyss," Knežević said.
As he said, he hopes that the opposition leaders will not fall into that trap and that they will be wise enough to gather around a non-party figure.
Knežević stated that the DF, as by far the strongest opposition alliance, has the responsibility to ensure that the process of selecting and nominating a non-party figure as a presidential candidate is not at any time the subject of daily political calculations, and especially that it does not become a cause for conflict on the opposition scene.
"Aware of this responsibility, in accordance with the interests of not only the DF, but also the rest of the opposition, we conduct regular activities that will result in the election of a person who would be a true representative of all citizens of Montenegro," said Knežević.
As he stated, the rest of the opposition is aware of DF's position on a non-party figure as a common opposition candidate in the presidential elections.
"Just as we were open to talk about joint protests, the government and parliament in the shadow and other forms of opposition activity, we are also ready to talk about this topic," said Knežević.
Unfortunately, as he said, a number of opposition parties are going through a serious crisis and divisions that will likely result in the creation of new political entities.
He added that a number of opposition parties do not want to discuss any of these topics at all and pursue a vague and undefined policy.
"That's why the DF, as the strongest opposition entity, is obliged to take responsibility and try to reconcile these extremes that exist on the opposition scene with its actions," said Knežević.
