The speed and quality of the negotiations on the accession of Montenegro to the European Union (EU) must correspond, in order to achieve success in the upcoming phase of negotiations, representatives of the Working Group of the Council for EU Enlargement (COELA) said at a meeting with members of the Parliamentary Committee for European Integration.
The statement of the Assembly states that COELA representatives emphasized that democracy and the rule of law are key aspects of the EU accession process.
"And in that part, they said that the speed and quality of negotiations must correspond, in order to achieve success in the upcoming phase of negotiations," the statement says.
It is stated that the members of the Committee communicated different views on Montenegro's progress in improving the rule of law, overall relations between Montenegro and the EU, the relationship between the Assembly and the Government, as well as current procedures aimed at improving the legislative branch of government.
It is added that the members of the Committee agree on the importance of further integration of Montenegro into the EU and that, as particularly important, they emphasized the adoption of a set of laws that were required for the Report on the fulfillment of temporary benchmarks for chapters 23 and 24 (IBAR).
The members of the Board, as reported, said that they are grateful for the support that Montenegrin institutions continuously receive from representatives of European institutions.
"They pointed out that the importance of close cooperation between the Assembly and the Government is crucial in the upcoming steps within the reform process and that, in this sense, we should work on even more intensive communication," the announcement says.
It is added that the Montenegrin MPs reminded that the political dialogue should be the basis of cooperation, and the recommendations of international partners an incentive for continuing reforms and achieving better results.
As announced by the Assembly, the president of that body Ivan Vuković and members Anđela Vojinović, Ana Novaković Đurović, Mihailo Anđušić and Adrijan Vuksanović were present at the meeting on behalf of the Committee for European Integration.
"The working group of the Council of the EU - COELA consists of representatives of the permanent representative offices of the member states to the EU, and their main responsibilities relate to the preparation of the EU's negotiating positions, the assessment of the progress of the candidate states in achieving the set criteria, and the maintenance of relations within the framework of the signed association agreements," it says. in the announcement.
