Hungary is a strong friend of the European perspective of Montenegro, announced Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović at a meeting with the President of the Hungarian Assembly, Laszlo Kover.
As announced by Milatović's cabinet, at the meeting it was assessed that the two countries are building meaningful friendship on a bilateral level, allied cooperation within NATO, while Hungary is one of the most consistent promoters of the policy of expansion to the Western Balkans.
Milatović said that Hungary is a strong friend of the European perspective of Montenegro.
He thanked Hungary for everything it has done when it comes to Montenegro's membership in NATO, and said that he has no doubt that it will play the same role when it comes to membership in the European Union (EU).
"We expect that by the end of this year, during Hungary's presidency of the Council of the EU, an intergovernmental conference will be organized at which Montenegro, after a break of several years, will continue closing the negotiation chapters," said Milatović.
He particularly emphasized the importance of economic cooperation between Montenegro and Hungary.
As he said, in recent years Hungary has assumed the role of an important economic factor in the Western Balkans region, and in Montenegro in the fields of telecommunications, banking and tourism.
"Hungarian investments are significant for the Montenegrin economy, and economic cooperation should be further deepened in the coming period," Milatović said.
Kover assessed that the excellent relations between the two countries are a recognition of the dedicated joint work aimed at the European integration of Montenegro.
He said that membership in the Union is not only a goal, but also an important means from the point of view of achieving national interests, and that he looks forward to the membership of Montenegro with great expectations.
Kover added that this is important for candidate countries and EU members in the context of security and stability, while, as he said, the economic potential of the region can be a further driver of the Union's economic development.
Milatović said that he expects the official visit of the President of Hungary, Tomas Šuljoka, to Montenegro, and expressed satisfaction with the upcoming Summit of the European Political Community, which will be held in Budapest at the beginning of November.
