Ivanovic: Respect the rights of the Serbian community in the north of Kosovo, resolve disputed issues peacefully

The Deputy Prime Minister for Foreign and European Affairs, Filip Ivanović, said that it is important to find sustainable solutions through dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina under the auspices of the European Union, stressing that Montenegro firmly supports the peaceful resolution of disputed issues.

He spoke today with the Serbian ambassador to Montenegro, Nebojša Rodić.

"In an open and cordial conversation, the interlocutors reiterated their commitment to the development of good neighborly relations, which are additionally strengthened by common European goals and regional cooperation," the Cabinet of the Deputy Prime Minister announced.

They say that at the meeting, opinions were also exchanged on the current situation in the north of Kosovo, "whereas concern was expressed due to the current inter-ethnic tensions".

"Vice President Ivanović emphasized the importance of finding sustainable solutions through dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina under the auspices of the European Union, stressing that Montenegro firmly supports the peaceful resolution of disputed issues. He underlined the importance of respecting the rights of the Serbian community in the north of Kosovo, with the hope that in the coming period reach a de-escalation of tensions and a political solution that will enable the preservation of peace and stability in the region," the announcement states.

Rodić, they add, presented Serbia's five-point plan, which is aimed at improving the living conditions of the Serbian community.

He also pointed out that Serbia remains committed to preserving peace and stability, and that it will take all necessary steps to avoid a worsening of the security situation.

"It was concluded that dialogue and cooperation, with respect for the rights of all communities, are key elements for long-term problem solving and preserving stability in the region. The interlocutors expressed their mutual hope that efforts in this direction will lead to constructive results," the announcement concludes.
