The President of Montenegro, Jakov Milatović, received the European Union's special representative for dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina and other regional issues of the Western Balkans, Miroslav Lajčak.
The two officials discussed the topic of further acceleration of reforms on Montenegro's European path.
"Our country is clearly determined to become the 28th member of the European Union by the end of 2028. Obtaining IBAR represents a turning point on our European path and entering the final phase of accession negotiations. By the end of the year, during Hungary's presidency of the EU Council, we expect the closure of four negotiation chapters, which will represent an additional boost to the achievement of our European goal," said Milatović.
Lajčak said that Montenegro has a unique opportunity to make rapid progress in the negotiation process and called on political actors to unite around this goal, the Cabinet of the President of Montenegro announced.
Milatović announced that the accession of Montenegro to the EU would be an important signal for other countries in the region, as a success story and motivation for continuing the negotiations.
He expressed the expectation that the new convocation of the European Commission will, from the very beginning, further devote itself to the enlargement policy, especially when it comes to Montenegro, because this is a way to show that every progress is adequately rewarded according to merit, as well as to revive hope in the European the perspective of all candidate countries.
