The President of Montenegro, Jakov Milatović, called on all leaders in the region to make statements that will be measured and appropriate and that are based on mutual appreciation and respect.
Milatović said this when asked to comment on Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić's statement "that Montenegro will respond on the spot with what it deserves, and that they do not know how to form a coalition". He also said that he had not seen Vučić's statement.
Asked whether he perceives Vučić's statement as some kind of threat to the negotiations and the eventual formation of the government in Podgorica, Milatović replied:
"I did not see that statement, we were at the meeting. You know that Vučić was duly invited to attend, he did not do so, but as far as I am informed, he will be with us at the working lunch. Serbia actively participated in the part of the joint voting of this declaration, which was adopted today It's true, like beauty in the eye of the beholder, and I will always send good-neighborly messages, and I would call on all leaders in the region to focus on building bridges the policy that the citizens expect us to lead. Geography is destiny, we are directed towards each other, and in this sense, Montenegro has played a constructive role so far, which it must maintain."
Milatović called on "all leaders to make statements that should be measured and appropriate and that are based on mutual appreciation and respect in order to realize the European future".
"Montenegro's policy is clear. As a success story, Montenegro must be the next member of the EU and we can do that in 2028. In this sense, we have the greatest support from Croatia and Slovenia, and together we can become a good example for other countries," he said.
When asked how he perceives the words of Vučić, that "they don't know how to form a coalition" and whether this affects the formation of the government, Milatović said that "the statements of all of us should be such that we try not to present domestic politics beyond the borders of our countries".
"Which is unfortunately often the case. I don't do that and I expect others not to," he replied.
Earlier today in Hamburg, Vučić said that Serbia is the main subject of all attacks in Montenegro and that Podgorica will respond on the spot "what it deserves".
After participating in the panel at the Hamburg conference on sustainability, he said in an address to the media that in Montenegro "they don't know how to form a coalition".
"That's why some people think that they can make a living over Serbia and that they still have the right to preach to us," said the President of Serbia.
"You will get the answer you deserve, on the spot because I wouldn't talk about it from here in Hamburg," said Vučić, who arrived in Tivat after visiting Germany, where he is participating in the Brdo-Brioni Process Leaders' Summit.
