Deputies of the Movement Europe Now (PES) will not support the proposal for the adoption of a law on agents of foreign influence in Montenegro, said the parliamentary group of that party.

The Coalition for the Future of Montenegro announced earlier today that it is urgent to pass a new law that will regulate the functioning of various foreign agencies that, as they stated, under the guise of non-governmental organizations, are trying to influence the internal and foreign policy of the state.

Members of the PES club told the MINA agency that any limitation of public thought and rhetoric containing relapses of repressive political regimes is foreign to the politics inherited by that party.

"As proven democratically oriented politicians, we stand firm in our views that the PES exclusively inherits the assets that represent the EU standards of democracy and freedom of thought and a clear commitment to membership in NATO," stated the parliamentary group of that party.

They said that since entering the parliamentary life, they firmly stood by every decision of the EU, both in terms of foreign policy, as well as in legislation and values related to the civil sector.

"Consequently, in formal policies and activities, as well as in values, we will not allow any disruption of the course of the liberal political tradition of Europe and the EU", said the Club of PES deputies.

They said that they will not allow civilized or legal deviations from that path, "so that non-governmental organizations can continue to work as before, within the framework that has already been established and is in accordance with European practices".

"We firmly stand by NATO and actively participate in all defense mechanisms of that alliance, including anti-espionage ones, but we do not support a unilateral ban on opinion and speech, so the PES parliamentary group will not support this proposal," said the party.

They asked who needs this kind of rhetoric.

"Because this issue can cause artificial divisions in our country, especially if we know that almost 80 percent of the citizens and 100 percent of the parliamentary majority are committed to our policy - full accession to the EU," stated the Club of PES deputies.
