The political situation in Montenegro after the 2020 elections is marked by political instability, frequent changes of government and deepening divisions. Although pro-European forces are still dominant in the political spectrum, this does not correspond to the parliamentary majority in which there are visible differences among the actors that make it up, said the president of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) Danijel Živković at a meeting with Viktorija Billing, director for Europe in the British Foreign Office.
The meeting was also attended by the head of the DPS Deputies Club, Andrija Nikolić.
Živković, while thanking the United Kingdom for continuous support to Montenegro in the process of social democratization reforms and European and Euro-Atlantic integrations, introduced Victoria Billing to current internal and regional developments and challenges, according to the press release sent by DPS to the media.
"The key decision-makers in reality behave contrary to the rhetoric they adapt to European addresses, often making decisions that are harmful to the state of society, and therefore to the negotiation process with the EU. All this, along with the interference of third parties, threatens the political stability of the country and its European perspective", Živković assessed.
He pointed out that DPS, which, as he added, has been visibly rejuvenated in terms of personnel, is still the key guarantor of preserving stable development, multi-ethnic democracy and building a rule of law society.
"Which is a prerequisite for achieving the strategic European goal, which is the key national interests of the country," said Živković.
He also referred to the recent local elections in Podgorica and said that the results best confirm the correctness of the program course of the DPS, which is gaining more and more support.
Nikolić, as stated in the press release of the DPS, introduced the interlocutors from the United Kingdom to the constructive role of that party in the parliament, which, as it is added, contributes to progress in integration from the opposition benches.
Billing pointed out that the United Kingdom continues to support the European path of Montenegro, stressing that this support is also important for the stability and progress of the region. In this context, she said that the constructive role of the DPS is important when it comes to supporting the process of European integration of Montenegro and expressed concern about pressures and interference from third parties, especially at a critical moment when Montenegro should take advantage of the opportunity that has arisen for accelerated path to membership in the EU, concludes the press release of the DPS.
