Montenegro has preserved its civil character, despite the effort to ethno-federalize, announced the president of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS), Danijel Živković.
"Ethnic engineering failed. The authorities in Serbia were interested in the census. There was a lot of pressure and propaganda. We can state that Montenegro has shown that it has a solid multi-ethnic core," Živković pointed out at a press conference in the Parliament of Montenegro, commenting today census results published.
He added that the results of the census do not go well with those who tried to cover Montenegro with a veil of nationalism.
"The level of maturity to establish control and prevent manipulations has been demonstrated. An environment has been provided for the census to be conducted under regular conditions. We believe that these data will serve in the creation of strategies to improve the lives of citizens," said Živković.
Živković said that for five years Montenegro has been under pressure and an aggressive campaign from the neighborhood to change its civic character.
"This has been going on since August 30, 2020, when we had the clerical government of Zdravko Krivokapić, the treacherous Abazović until this nationalist-populist one. Montenegro is resisting all pressures, and these attempts started as early as Vojislav Koštunica. You heard from political leaders subjects who said that it is necessary to change the Constitution if more than 50 percent of citizens declare that they speak the Serbian language. The expectation of the political competition was that the Constitution should be changed when that number increases, but we see that that number has not changed significantly since 2011." , said Zivkovic.
He told her that "when we talk about language, the issue is that in Montenegro we have a clearly established rule - the Montenegrin language is the language of the state of Montenegro".
"Those who are permanently resident in Montenegro and do not have citizenship - when we take them into account, then we will have complete data. If we were to take what is the reference moment, the percentage of citizens, there would be other data," he said.
