The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is ready to contribute to strengthening the state and improving the situation in Montenegro in the area of migration, said the head of the IOM office in Montenegro, Vladimir Gjorgjiev.
The Deputy Prime Minister for Foreign and European Affairs, Filip Ivanović, received today Gjorgjiev, with whom he discussed the modalities of strengthening long-term cooperation through numerous projects and initiatives to raise standards, strengthen capacities and overall improvement of migration management.
Ivanović's cabinet said that the support that the IOM Office continuously provides to the Ministry of Internal Affairs through projects in the field of capacity building and integrated border management is particularly emphasized.
This, as they said, directly contributes to a higher level of security in the Western Balkan region and beyond.
"Gjorgjiev expressed the readiness of the IOM to contribute to the strengthening of the state and improvement of the situation in Montenegro in the field of migration, which is one of the key issues of the European Union (EU) and its member states," the statement said.
He, as stated, invited Ivanovic to participate in the meeting of IOM members in Geneva and informed him about the organization's plans to organize a regional conference on migration in Montenegro next year, which would confirm Montenegro's leadership position in the field of migration management in the Western the Balkans.
Ivanović thanked for supporting the European integration process and improving the situation in Montenegro in the area of migration.
"The projects of that organization are based on the recommendations of the European Commission in Chapter 24, and in this framework, the IOM becomes an important partner of Montenegro on its European path," Ivanović emphasized.
As reported, he expressed Montenegro's support for safe, controlled and orderly migration, in accordance with the goals of the UN Global Compact on Migration.
"He especially welcomed the involvement of the IOM in the project of engaging the diaspora to strengthen the sustainable development of Montenegro, which analyzes and promotes the positive aspects of migration and encourages the role of the diaspora in the economic development of the country and connecting the cultures of the mother country and the host country," the statement said.
It is reported that Ivanovic emphasized the need for further coordination with the IOM in Montenegro regarding the adoption of legislation, issuance of work permits, protection of workers' rights and inspection supervision when it comes to sectors in which Montenegro lacks manpower.
"Given the plans for Montenegro to become a member of the EU by 2028, as well as the importance that the state attaches to the development of new technologies and the IT sector, Ivanović indicated that it can be expected that in the coming period, Montenegro will become more receptive to the arrival of people, both from the countries of Europe and outside it," said his cabinet.
