Europe needs those who share its values, and the Western Balkans needs stronger European investments, said the President of Montenegro, Jakov Milatović.

He attended the fifth summit of the European Political Community in Budapest, where he emphasized the importance of a long-term European presence for a stable and prosperous future of the region.

He called on the European Union to invest more in the Western Balkans.

Milatović, it was reported from the public relations office of the President of Montenegro, pointed out that membership in the EU is a key goal for Montenegro, presenting it as a confirmation of democratic identity and European values.

"We live in challenging times, but I believe that, with unity and unwavering commitment to our common principles, Europe can face all challenges. At this stage of negotiations, Montenegro acts as if it is already a member of the Union, fully harmonizing its foreign and security policy with the EU," Milatović said.

He addressed the serious challenges facing Europe, including cyber threats, energy insecurity and economic dependency. He particularly pointed out the importance of strengthening the digital and energy infrastructure, recalling the project to double the capacity of the electric cable with Italy, which makes Montenegro an important energy partner in the region.

According to the press release, Milatović praised the Growth Plan as a good example for accelerating economic convergence, but warned that the process of democratization and strengthening of institutions must go hand in hand with economic development along the way.

"We must not forget that sustainable growth requires stable and strong institutions that will be able to support long-term development. We believe that Europe is stronger and more connected when our infrastructure is aligned with common standards and strategic goals. New transport corridors should be developed through mutual agreements that respect the interests of the countries of the Western Balkans. If the EU and our countries do not make it a priority, third countries will inevitably step in," said Milatović.
