The essence of our European path lies in the acceptance of European, that is, Western values, and not in administrative restrictions on that path, announced the president of the Social Democrats (SD) and one of the leaders of the European Union, Damir Šehović.
The European Union announced that Šehović met with the Austrian ambassador to Montenegro, Christian Steiner.
"On that occasion, Šehović congratulated the ambassador on his recent appointment and expressed his expectation that his mandate will be successful and that Montenegro and Austria will continue to strengthen bilateral relations. He particularly emphasized the importance of Austria's support for the process of European integration, which rightly represents the most important the foreign policy priority of Montenegro," the announcement states.
The European Union said that Šehović used the opportunity to introduce Steiner to his view of the political situation in Montenegro.
"He expressed concern about the discrepancy between the verbal commitment of the current government to the European agenda and the anti-European practice that we witness almost every day, especially by certain constituents of the government, who have always been, and still are today, fundamental opponents of Western values and advocates of pro-Putin views," the statement reads. .
Šehović emphasized that "despite the harsh criticism of the current government and the mentioned anti-European practice, SD and other constituents of the European Union will continue to affirm and concretely promote the European perspective of Montenegro, because it was they who founded those values in the country in the 90s".
The European Union said that Steiner expressed his gratitude to Šehović for the meeting and for the congratulations on his appointment.
"He confirmed his firm determination to make every effort so that Austria continues to provide strong support to the process of European integration of Montenegro, using the favorable climate for enlargement that currently prevails in the European Union.
