The European Commission (EC) is ready to support Montenegro in its ambition to close all chapters in the membership negotiation process by the end of 2026, European Commissioner for Enlargement Oliver Varhelji said on Monday.
"We take note of Montenegro's ambition to complete the accession negotiations by the end of 2026 and we are ready to support this ambitious goal if the relevant conditions are met," said the European Commissioner at the European Parliament's foreign policy committee where he presented this year's enlargement package.
After several years of stagnation, in June of this year, Montenegro unfroze the membership negotiations with the European Union (EU).
The outgoing commissioner for enlargement has announced the possibility that the country will move towards closing other chapters by the end of this year.
This is the last package presented by Varhelja, since the European Commission will soon have a new composition and the enlargement sector will be taken over by Marta Kos from Slovenia.
