Montenegro is the most advanced candidate for membership in the European Union (EU) and it is necessary to speed up the integration process, it was announced at the meeting of Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović with the new European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos.
Milatović said at the meeting in Brussels that he was satisfied that the commissioner for enlargement is a good expert on the situation in the Western Balkans.
In the press release of Milatović's cabinet, it is stated that the common goal is that Montenegro, as the most advanced candidate country for membership, soon realizes its main foreign policy goal and becomes a full member of the EU.
Milatović pointed out that Montenegro fully harmonizes its foreign policy with the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the EU and that the citizens' support for EU membership of around 80 percent is an example and incentive for the countries of the region.
"The President emphasized the need for continued presence and close cooperation with the European Commission in order to successfully conclude the accession negotiations," the statement said.
It is stated that it was pointed out that it is necessary to develop new modalities together with the European Commission for measures of early integration and additional approximation of Montenegro to the institutional structure of the EU.
"Montenegro has been negotiating for twice as long as the longest negotiations in the history of the EU - this is a signal that we all have to speed up the process," said Milatović.
Kos highlighted Montenegro as the most advanced of the candidate countries, adding that there is a real chance to visit Montenegro by the end of the year.
