The Ambassador of the European Union (EU) in Montenegro, Johan Satler, warned about the alarming situation in the field of environmental protection, said the Party of European Progress (SEP), and called on Prime Minister Milojko Spajić to deal with the problem.

Matija Vujović from SEP said that Montenegro is at a complete standstill in environmental protection, one of the most demanding areas in negotiations with the EU.

He said that on the official portal on European integration, the last information on Chapter 27 - environment and climate change - dates from May 2022.

"At the conference on waste treatment, the Head of the EU Delegation, Satler, directly warned the Government about the alarming situation, pointing out that due to the lack of engagement and planning, no project in this area has been defined," said Vujović.

According to him, Satler pointed to the catastrophic situation with waste in Bijelo Polje, Nikšić and Podgorica, where Nikšić's waste additionally pollutes the capital.

Vujović said that citizens witness overflowing containers, rats in populated parts of Podgorica, landfills that suffocate the environment and inadequate disposal of dead animals every day.

He added that the Željezara plants in Nikšić were turned into a landfill.

"The working group for Chapter 27 held only a constitutive session, while the key document - the State Waste Management Plan - has still not been adopted," stated Vujović.

He invited Spajić to deal with that topic.

"SEP calls on Spajić to stop dealing with myths about "Europe Now 2" and to urgently dedicate himself to this key challenge," Vujović said.

He also called on the chief negotiator of Montenegro with the EU, Predrag Zenović, to prioritize professional and technical resources in order for the country to move forward and emerge from, as he said, the ecological chaos.
