The United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly adopted a resolution demanding an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, as well as the release of all hostages.
A resolution expressing support for the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNWRA), which Israel has banned, was also adopted.
Montenegro was among the countries that requested a ceasefire.
That request was adopted with 158 votes "for" in the assembly which has 193 member countries. The United States, Israel and seven other countries voted against.
Resolutions of the General Assembly are not legally binding, although they reflect world opinion.
