By strengthening cooperation with the diaspora, we contribute to the further affirmation of Montenegro as a multi-ethnic and civil state, announced the president of the Social Democrats (SD), Damir Šehović.
The SD announced that Šehović and Nihad Canović, president of Plav Municipality and member of the SD Presidency, are on a multi-day visit to New York at the invitation of the Montenegrin diaspora.
"Our diaspora represents one of the most important pillars of Montenegro abroad, and their contribution to the preservation of traditional, civil and cultural values deserves special respect. By strengthening cooperation with the diaspora, we contribute to the further affirmation of Montenegro as a multi-ethnic and civil state," said Šehović.
The announcement states that during the visit, Canović and Šehović will traditionally attend a donor dinner organized by the Gusinje Foundation, as well as a New Year's cocktail organized by the Consulate General of Montenegro in New York.
"In addition to these events, meetings are also planned with representatives of other organizations that gather Montenegrin emigrants in New York, with the aim of further strengthening their ties with their home country," the announcement reads.
Canović said that the diaspora provides a very significant contribution, especially when it comes to the development of Plavo and Gusinje, where a large number of emigrants come from.
"Their commitment represents the best example of a responsible attitude towards the home state and preservation of ties with the homeland. Therefore, cooperation with the diaspora is crucial for the further development of Montenegro, as well as its overall social and economic progress," said Canović.
The SD announced that that party and the European Union, to which the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the Liberal Party (LP) belong in addition to the SD, are aware of the contribution that the diaspora provides.
