The organizing committee of Kuč and friends of Kuč and the Serbian National Council of Montenegro request that the monument to Duke Mirko Petrović be moved from Independence Square in Podgorica.
They announced that they will submit this request, along with a petition and citizens' signatures, to the city authorities on the first working day in 2025.
"After the constitution of the City Assembly of Podgorica and the election of the President of the City Assembly and the Mayor of Podgorica, the Organizing Committee of Kuč and friends of Kuč, with the support of the Serbian National Council of Montenegro, and in accordance with the Law on Monuments and the Statute of the Capital City, collected a sufficient number of signatures of support for the Petition moving the monument to Duke Mirko Petrović from the central square in Podgorica We are launching the initiative to move the monument to Duke Mirko Petrović in accordance with Article 10 of the Law on Memorials Paragraph 7 states that: "a person who has had a negative role in the history of Montenegro, or the history of humanity, is not allowed to erect a memorial." Also, Article 15 of the same Law states: memorials are erected in the place where a significant event took place, in the place where a prominent person was born, created, worked, died or died, i.e. in a place that is adequate for achieving the goal that is being erected he wants to realize memorials'", the announcement reads.
They claim that Duke Mirko Petrović in Podgorica "participated only in a crime against his own people", so they say that is why they are determined that "this kind of memorial cannot survive in an area that reminds us of misfortune and humiliation every day".
"On the first working day in 2025, the organizing committee will submit to the mayor, the president of the municipal assembly and the councilors of the capital city, together with a petition and signatures of citizens, a request for the relocation of the memorial to Duke Mirko Petrović from the central square in Podgorica", announced the organizing committee of Kuča and friends of Kuča and the Serbian National Council of Montenegro.
