The Minister of Justice of Montenegro, Bojan Božović, is on an official visit to the United Kingdom.
A delegation consisting of representatives of the Ministry of Justice and the non-governmental organization AIRE Center from London met with the President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, Lord Reed, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Court, Vicky Fox. The meeting, as announced by the Ministry of Justice, discussed the exchange of knowledge and practices to improve the independence of the judiciary and the transparency of the work of the courts.
"This visit represents an opportunity to exchange experiences and learn from the practice of the United Kingdom, especially when it comes to the independence of the judiciary, building trust in the judiciary, and cooperation with the media and citizens in strengthening that trust. We have also requested expert and institutional support with the aim of further strengthening the judicial system of Montenegro," said Božović.
Director of the AIRE Center Program for the Western Balkans, Biljana Braithwaite, pointed out that this visit is also important for strengthening the principles of the rule of law in Montenegro, in accordance with the most important international standards.
"By learning from the established practices of the United Kingdom, we further strengthen our commitment to Montenegro's European integration and judicial reforms," she said.
The statement states that the delegation had the opportunity to visit the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), where they spoke with Jamie Harrison, Deputy Director General of the LCIA, and Kevin Nash, future Director General of the LCIA. The focus of the discussion was on improving the legal framework for arbitration in Montenegro, as well as the jurisdiction of arbitral tribunals as key mechanisms for resolving commercial disputes.
"Today's talks with the LCIA aim to position Montenegro as a serious and reliable partner in the resolution of commercial disputes, with an emphasis on further development and improvement of its position in the field of international arbitration. The meeting was aimed at identifying and solving key issues related to the construction of legal infrastructure that would inspire public confidence and ensure transparency and efficiency," said Vanja Radević, AIRE Center project manager.
As part of today's visits, a meeting was also held with Gary Born, president of the International Arbitration Practice Group and partner of the Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP law office. Born is a renowned global expert in international commercial arbitration and litigation.
The official visit of the Ministry of Justice of Montenegro was organized by the AIRE Center with the support of the Government of the United Kingdom, as part of a project implemented in Montenegro. The project is focused on strengthening the legal framework for arbitration through a comparative analysis of regional and international experiences. These activities are part of the long-term efforts of the AIRE center in promoting the rule of law in Montenegro, in accordance with European and international standards.
