The Committee for Comprehensive Electoral Reform still has little time to take a position that all local elections be held simultaneously, said Minister of Public Administration Maraš Dukaj.
He recalled that in 2025, local elections will be held in Nikšić, Herceg Novi, Mojkovac, Petnjica and Cetinje.
"The Ministry of Public Administration, back in May 2024, formally submitted to the Committee the Initiative for the direct election of municipal presidents and holding local elections on the same day, and today it is ready to provide expert assistance in implementing this important reform. By deciding to hold local elections simultaneously, the Committee would fulfill one of the most important tasks for which it was established," Dukaj wrote on his X account.
He added that there were seven election cycles in 2024, but that the Committee, established on December 23, 2023, could not influence that.
"Now it can and should be. By making a decision according to our Initiative, which is in line with European standards, a problem like the one in Šavnik is solved, as well as most of the challenges of constituting government in several municipalities. Additionally, the Committee would in practice justify the reasons for its existence. Failure to make this decision would prove that politicians are not ready to demonstrate European standards and European values in practice and that such a Committee represents political and institutional mimicry that wastes citizens' time and disavows democratic governance," said Dukaj.
