The President of the Social Democrats of Montenegro and one of the leaders of the European Union, Damir Šehović, will participate in the meeting of opposition leaders with the European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos. However, the deputies of the Social Democrats (SD) will not attend the session of the Parliament at which Kos will address, clearly expressing a principled position towards the President of the Parliament of Montenegro and the parliamentary majority that recently carried out a constitutional coup and plunged the country into a state of political instability, said the political party. They say that with this move they are sending a strong message.
"Marta Kos, as a representative of our European partners, is always welcome in Montenegro, and the European Union has an unwavering and reliable ally in the Social Democrats and other constituents of the European Union. However, the Parliament, led by Andrija Mandić, a man whose political actions are contrary to European values, is not a place where serious discussions can be held about the future of Montenegro on its European path," the SD points out.
This party assessed that it is clear that the head of the parliamentary majority, Andrija Mandić, will try to instrumentalize the arrival of Ms. Kos in order to present himself as a pro-European politician and statesman.
"However, the reality is completely different: Parliament is blocked because that majority brutally violated the Constitution, and citizens in the capital are clearly expressing their dissatisfaction, demanding the resignations of the security sector leaders. We will not participate in this simulation of democracy, directed by Andrija Mandić," said the SD.
The party said that their fight for Montenegro's European future remains unwavering and that the key prerequisite for that future is the removal of Andrija Mandić and the removal of the anti-European structures that currently make up the parliamentary majority.
"Montenegro's European path cannot be held hostage by retrograde policies and individuals who undermine the reputation of our institutions. The fight for European values continues, and the SD and the European Union are ready to make the necessary contribution to such an approach, always and everywhere," the SD statement concluded.
