The Auschwitz camp is the most striking example of the eclipse of humanity, but also a warning to current and all future generations that there is no alternative to cultivating the universal values of peace and tolerance, said the President of Montenegro, Jakov Milatović.

As announced by the President's Office, Milatović, along with numerous world officials, is attending the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland.

"With a special sense of respect, today I attend the commemoration marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland," Milatović said.

He said that the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, established by a United Nations Resolution from 2005, is an important reminder for all of humanity of the horrors that befell the Jewish people in World War II, as well as all other peoples who were victims of Nazi and fascist crimes.

"The Auschwitz camp is the most striking example of the eclipse of humanity, but also a warning to ours, and all future generations, that there is no alternative to cultivating the universal values of peace and tolerance," said Milatović.

He assessed that it was important that, as the president of a country that was among the first in Europe to see the destructiveness of fascism and Nazism and to rise up against those who wanted to enslave it, he should send a message from that place that anti-fascism represents one of the most important value verticals of Montenegro.

Milatović emphasized that it is everyone's obligation to work together to preserve the culture of memory and educate young people about tragic events from the past, so that such crimes never happen again.

"Also, on this occasion, I would like to express my respect for the victims of this and other execution sites and, at the same time, pay tribute to all the fighters in World War II who built their life's work, and some of them even their lives, into the freedom they bequeathed to us," said Milatović.
