The President of the Party of European Socialists, Stefan Löfven, announced that the return of United States President (US) Donald Trump to the White House is another blow to the foundations of democracy.
The Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) announced that Leven had expressed his support ahead of the 10th DPS Congress.
"Dear friends,
"It is a great pleasure for me to address you today, friends and comrades of the Democratic Party of Socialists, on this special day. First of all, I would like to congratulate the DPS family on another successful Congress: members, activists and all those in public office. Thanks to you, our movement is alive. I would also like to extend my sincere compliments to the party leadership for their continued commitment to progressive ideals," Leven's message, provided by the DPS, reads.
Leven added that the DPS 10-point program is a testament to the party's support for social democracy.
"It covers all areas of life in Montenegro, ensuring that no one is left behind. I want to emphasize the importance of your commitment to directly engaging society. This is not just a political strategy, it is a reflection of our belief in the power of collective action. Commitments like this in times when democracy is under attack are essential," said Leven.
In his words, the rise of the far right is a reality around the world, and Trump's return to the White House is another blow to the foundations of democracy.
"So, we must be extremely careful. Because, no matter how sophisticated democracy is, it is never safe from those who see it as an obstacle to achieving power. That is why we must really address the concerns of citizens, the causes of poverty and the wealth gap, in order to create a safe environment for citizens and for democracy to flourish. Danijel and DPS embody this fight in Montenegro. As President of PES, you can count on our support in this fight to protect democracy. And socialists will do it together. In a world of uncertainty and instability, we must continue to stand with progressive forces around the world," said Leven.
He said that Montenegro is on its way to joining the European Union.
"We know that this is also a clear reflection of the hard work that DPS stands for. As the President of PES, I am proud to support this path and believe that the values and principles of DPS are in line with the European vision. I am confident that your continued, hard work will make Montenegro a beacon of progress and development in the region. Thank you for your time and let's continue to work together for a better future," said Leven.
