Montenegro, with a proactive and comprehensive approach at the national level and establishing a solid framework, strives to contribute to global efforts to eliminate the risk of proliferation of weapons of mass destruction by non-state actors, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Srđan Darmanović.
He said this in New York at a session of the United Nations Security Council, at an open debate on global efforts on the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction from non-state actors.
As announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Darmanović reminded that Montenegro adopted a national strategy on the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, as the first country in the Western Balkans.
He condemned the increasingly frequent violations of relevant Security Council resolutions, and emphasized the importance of continuous and immediate action on the national, regional and international level.
Darmanović also pointed to Montenegro's strong commitment to the implementation of Resolution 1540 and reiterated the Government's determination to actively contribute to the joint and coherent efforts of the international community in the coming period, through the engagement of all segments of society, in order to provide an effective response to challenges of a global scale.
It is stated that Darmanović spoke with the Assistant Secretary General of the UN for Political Affairs, Jaroslav Jenča, and for Peacekeeping Missions, El Gasim Vein.
In his conversation with Jenča, Darmanović confirmed Montenegro's commitment to multilateralism and active action in the field of human rights, sustainable development and peace and security, as key pillars of the Organization.
The interlocutors assessed the role that Montenegro plays in strengthening stability in the Western Balkans and strengthening the European perspective of the region as very constructive.
Jenča congratulated the membership in NATO and expressed his belief that in the new capacity, Montenegro will continue to be a reliable partner both regionally and in the wider global framework.
It is reported that in the conversation with Vejna, Darmanović reiterated Montenegro's firm determination to continue contributing to the preservation and improvement of international peace and security and to expand its engagement in UN humanitarian and peacekeeping missions.
Wayne emphasized that the United Nations values a quality and constructive partnership with Montenegro, and expressed his gratitude for our very responsible participation in peacekeeping missions.
