The European Parliament will open an office for the Western Balkans in Albania to strengthen its engagement in the region, "in the context of heightened geopolitical tensions and renewed momentum for European Union enlargement," the institution announced.
The head of the Montenegrin parliament, Andrija Mandić, said in September 2024 that our country plans to apply to have a regional EP office opened in Podgorica.
Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović also discussed this idea with representatives of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee in December last year.
The new European Parliament office in Tirana will serve as a key point for its contact with national parliaments, civil society and local partners in the Western Balkans, the EP said in a statement.
They add that "the office will promote the parliament's positions and its activities, particularly in relation to accession to the European Union, and will support democracy and institutional reforms in the region."
She will "assist in preparations for official visits by European parliamentarians and what comes after those visits, while strengthening cooperation with other European players on the ground and with international and civil society organizations," the statement reads.
