The closing of negotiation chapters and the achievement of other key goals clearly show that Montenegro is on the right path towards the European Union (EU), said Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, adding that Hungary will continue to strongly support the enlargement process.
As announced by the Government, Deputy Prime Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Filip Ivanović met with Szijjarto during his visit to Budapest.
The government said that the conversation was an opportunity to review current bilateral relations between the two countries and to confirm Hungary's continued support for Montenegro on its path towards EU membership.
Szijjártó stressed that Hungary will continue to strongly support the EU enlargement process and stressed that the country is proud of the role it has played in supporting the reforms implemented by Montenegro.
"The closing of negotiation chapters and the achievement of other key goals clearly shows that Montenegro is on the right path towards the EU," Szijjártó stated.
Ivanovic thanked Hungary for its strong and continuous support for Montenegro, especially during its six-month presidency of the Council of the EU.
He, as reported, emphasized the importance of Hungary's contribution to Montenegro's accession process.
As Ivanovic emphasized, thanks to the dedicated work of the Government of Montenegro and the commitment of Hungary, Montenegro achieved key progress in December by closing three negotiation chapters, which is the first time in seven years.
He and Szijjártó agreed that relations between Montenegro and Hungary are excellent and will continue to deepen at all levels.
"The interlocutors discussed cooperation in the areas of economy, security, education and culture and emphasized successful Hungarian investments in Montenegro. These investments represent a key basis for further strengthening bilateral relations," the statement said.
Ivanovic thanked Szijjarto for his continued commitment to the rapid accession of the Western Balkan countries to the EU, among which Montenegro is the leader.
He stated that he is confident that Montenegro, with the support of Hungary and other EU members, will achieve the goal of full membership in the Union by 2028.
"Finally, the interlocutors expressed their commitment to further intensifying political dialogue and cooperation between Montenegro and Hungary, noting that cooperation between the two countries will continue to develop in all areas of common interest," the statement said.
